Technical SEO is the Foundation of AI Search (November 2026)|ひーやん|SEO・AIO・LLMO対策コンサルティング
Are you looking for special measures for AI search?
In an interview published in October, Google’s John Mueller stated that SEO is not dead. He noted that many AI mechanisms are built on top of existing SEO, and that technical SEO, in particular, remains important. We will organize the content of his remarks, their connection to Google’s guidelines, and points that site owners should review.
Explanation of AI Search and Technical SEO by Google’s Mueller (November 2026)
・Many AIs are built on top of SEO
・Technical SEO explained as remaining important
・Mass-producing summary articles will eventually be detected
Google Says Technical SEO Remains Key For AI SEO
The remarks were made during an interview with international SEO expert David Iwanow. When asked if AI search methods like AEO and GEO are already over, Mueller replied that since many AI mechanisms are based on SEO, SEO will continue to be relevant in the future. He emphasized that technical SEO, in particular, remains very important.
He cited AI crawling as the reason. AI systems may come to a site to learn, or they may come to retrieve new information. If the purpose is different, the way they crawl also changes. Mueller explains that this difference is also a form of technical SEO.
He was also asked about the method of creating a large number of summary articles (so-called listicles) to be selected by AI. Mueller stated that while summary articles themselves are not spam, it is risky to make thousands of them the core of a strategy. His view is that, like keyword stuffing or text the same color as the background, even if it works at first, systems will learn to detect it as it becomes widely used. He recommends that site owners verify what vendors are actually doing if they promise extreme results.
As a concrete example of technical SEO, he mentioned the “Crawl stats” report in Search Console. Although it is a feature that is not used very often, he wants people to check it regularly. If you notice unusual crawling or a sudden increase in the time it takes to fetch pages early, you can prevent Google from significantly reducing crawling. This is because it takes time for reduced crawling to recover.
Why you should review your current pages rather than AI-specific measures
The same idea is written in Google’s guidelines. For a page to appear in AI overviews or AI modes, it must be indexed, be able to display a snippet in Google Search, and meet the technical requirements for search. There are no other technical requirements, and no special files or special structured data for AI are needed.
There is also a movement to prepare separate Markdown pages for AI. In a Reddit post reported in August, Mueller mentioned that on his own test site, only SEO tools came to fetch the Markdown files. No evidence has been shown that they have become easier to use for AI answers.
For B2B sites, pages such as price lists, service descriptions, and case studies are the pages you want to be cited in AI answers. If these pages are not indexed, snippets are blocked, or crawling is reduced, no amount of effort for AI will reach them. Before adding new methods, it is a priority to verify the foundation of your existing pages.
Three points to review for AI search
① Check the indexing and snippets of pages you want to be cited
List pages you want AI to cite, such as price lists, service descriptions, and case studies, and verify that they are indexed in Search Console. Also, check to ensure there are no directives like ‘nosnippet’ that would prevent snippets from being displayed.
② Periodic check of crawl statistics
Check the ‘Crawl stats’ available in Search Console settings at least once a month. Verify that the number of crawls and average response times have not changed abruptly, and ensure there are no issues with the host status.
③ Understanding the content of measures outsourced to third parties
If you outsource AI search optimization, ensure your company understands what is being done, such as mass-producing summary articles or creating AI-specific pages. Evaluate measures that promise extreme results by comparing them against Google’s guidelines.
