I will summarize two AI news stories from today based on official announcements.

First story: Google and others release the 11th edition of the “e-Conomy SEA” report on Southeast Asia’s digital economy.

According to the official Google blog (dated October 21, 2026), the report “Building the Intelligent Economy” by Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company states that the Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) of Southeast Asia’s digital economy is expected to reach $368 billion in 2026 (a 17% increase year-over-year). It is projected to exceed $1 trillion by 2035.

Regarding AI, it is explained that 243 million people (58% of the workforce) use generative AI daily, with an adoption rate four times faster than that of the mobile internet. AI usage in the region is predicted to increase 60-fold over the next five years, with 62% of people responding that they trust AI more than they did a year ago, and 75% being open to AI agents handling price comparisons and purchases on their behalf. It is also noted that data center capacity will need to increase by approximately three times over the next five years.

Second story: AWS publishes procedures for using Amazon Quick in HIPAA-eligible environments.

The official AWS blog (dated October 22, 2026) contains an implementation guide for using Amazon Quick in environments compliant with U.S. healthcare information laws (HIPAA). Amazon Quick is a HIPAA-eligible service; encryption at rest is enabled by default, and TLS is used for data in transit. It is designed not to return documents if access control for each document cannot be verified, and it is recommended that operation records (audit logs) be retained for at least six years. It is stated that customer data is not used to train the underlying AI models.

As a point of caution, the article notes that “HIPAA-eligible” and “HIPAA-compliant” are different, and that the execution of a Business Associate Agreement (BAA), configuration, and organizational management are the responsibility of the user. The Free and Plus tiers are not covered by the BAA. It is also noted that guardrails work probabilistically, meaning they reduce risk but do not eliminate it.

My thoughts

The first story provided figures on a region where AI is set to expand, while the second story discussed procedures for using that expanded AI in sensitive areas like healthcare. I believe that as AI becomes more widely used, rules for using it reliably become increasingly important. Note that since the first story is centered on projections by research institutions, it is best to read the figures as future forecasts.
