Perplexity Expands AI Beyond the Browser With New Mac-Based ‘Personal Computer’ Feature

Perplexity has unveiled a new feature called “Personal Computer” for Mac users, aiming to bring AI assistance directly onto personal devices instead of limiting it to browser-based chatbots. The company says the feature is designed to help users automate complex workflows by allowing AI agents to access local files, native applications, web tools, and cloud services from within a Mac environment.

Most AI assistants today primarily function through cloud-based interfaces. While they are capable of answering questions, generating content, and summarising information, users often need to manually transfer files or switch between applications to complete tasks. Perplexity’s latest move seeks to simplify that process by giving AI deeper integration with the user’s computer.

According to the company, “Personal Computer” is built on top of Perplexity’s existing AI agent platform, which was developed to handle longer and more advanced workflows with minimal user involvement. With the Mac integration, those capabilities now extend to the local device environment.

Perplexity said the AI system can interact with folders, documents, spreadsheets, PDFs, browser-based tools, and native Mac applications. The feature also supports more than 400 connectors, allowing the AI to pull information from multiple platforms and services.

For example, users can ask the AI assistant to organise folders, compare documents, summarise reports, analyse spreadsheets, or compile notes from different applications into a draft. The company noted that the goal is to reduce the need for users to constantly move between tabs and applications during work.

The AI also integrates with Perplexity’s Comet browser, enabling it to work with online tools alongside local applications. Despite the broader system access, Perplexity stressed that users remain in control of sensitive actions. The company stated that approval prompts will appear whenever the AI attempts actions that require permission.

Another aspect highlighted by Perplexity is continuous background processing. The company explained that when running on devices such as a Mac mini, the AI agents can remain active and continue handling tasks while users focus on other work.

Perplexity also pointed to Apple ecosystem integration as a key advantage. Users can reportedly begin a task on an iPhone while the AI continues working through files and apps stored on their Mac device.

The launch places Perplexity in closer competition with major AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. However, Perplexity is positioning its offering differently by emphasising direct interaction with files and applications stored locally on a user’s machine.

While ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot offer integrations with cloud services and productivity apps, much of their AI processing takes place on remote servers. Perplexity’s approach attempts to bridge cloud intelligence with local device-level workflows.

The updated Perplexity macOS app is available starting today through the company’s official website. It is not currently listed on the Mac App Store. Perplexity also confirmed that the older version of its Mac application will gradually be discontinued over the coming weeks as users transition to the newer version with “Personal Computer” support.
