PayU Brings AI Coding And CLI Tools To Payment Developers
PayU has launched two developer-focused products: PayU Builder MCP, an AI-powered server for payment gateway integrations, and PayU CLI, a command-line interface designed to simplify payment operations.
The two products address different stages of the payment lifecycle. Builder MCP is aimed at developers building payment integrations. It connects AI coding assistants such as Cursor, VS Code, and Claude Desktop with PayU’s APIs to generate production-ready payment integration code.
According to PayU, the tool supports more than seven programming languages, including JavaScript, Java, Python, PHP, Kotlin, and Swift. It also generates code with error handling, webhook verification, and security best practices built in, allowing developers to work without constantly referring to documentation.
Instead of relying on code samples or searching documentation manually, developers can retrieve platform-specific integration code directly inside their development environment.
Reducing Operational Dependence On Dashboards
While Builder MCP focuses on integration, PayU CLI targets day-to-day payment operations.
The command-line interface allows developers and operations teams to create payment links, search transactions, process refunds, review settlements, and generate reports directly from the terminal.
The CLI also supports multiple merchant accounts and allows teams to switch between testing and production environments without moving between different dashboards.
For engineering and DevOps teams handling payment infrastructure across several merchants, this could reduce repetitive operational tasks and streamline workflows.
AI As A Productivity Layer
PayU says both tools reflect how AI is changing software engineering rather than simply adding another automation feature.
Explaining the company’s approach, Narendra Babu, CTO, PayU, said: ‘AI has fundamentally transformed software development, and AI agents have become a more nuanced part of everyday developer workflows. Merchants and their tech teams are now looking for a payment partner that provides lightning-fast product integrations, operational flexibility and enhanced developer productivity. Our new CLI and Builder MCP tools solve each of these requirements by bringing PayU’s payment infrastructure to where developers work – in the terminal. This is just the first of our steps in this direction.”
The announcement suggests PayU is positioning itself not only as a payment gateway provider but also as a developer infrastructure platform, an area that has become increasingly important as enterprises look to shorten product development cycles.
Connecting Development And Operations
PayU expects the two tools to work together across the payment lifecycle. Developers can use Builder MCP during implementation to generate payment integration code through AI assistants, while operations teams can rely on PayU CLI after deployment for transaction monitoring, settlement tracking, refunds, and payment link creation.
The company illustrated a workflow where a developer generates production-ready JavaScript integration code through an AI coding assistant, while an operations team manages payment activities entirely through terminal commands instead of dashboard navigation.
This reflects a broader industry trend where AI is increasingly being embedded into developer tooling rather than existing as a standalone application.
Developer Experience Is Becoming A Competitive Differentiator
As digital payments continue expanding, payment providers are competing on more than transaction success rates and payment methods. Developer experience is emerging as another important differentiator.
Platforms that reduce integration complexity and simplify operational management may become more attractive to enterprises building AI-native applications and digital commerce platforms.
PayU’s latest launch reflects that shift. Instead of treating AI as another customer-facing feature, the company is applying it to the engineering layer where software is built and payment infrastructure is managed.
