Microsoft to invest $5.5bn in Singapore, boosting AI skills and workforce readiness, ETCIO
Microsoft will invest $5.5 billion in Singapore between 2025 and 2029 to strengthen AI infrastructure and workforce readiness, alongside expanding nationwide skilling programmes targeting students, educators, and nonprofit leaders.
The investment will support cloud and AI infrastructure, while scaling initiatives designed to embed AI literacy across the workforce. As part of the rollout, more than 200,000 tertiary students will receive free access to Microsoft 365 Premium with Copilot for 12 months, equipping them with AI-enabled productivity tools to enhance employability in a rapidly evolving job market.
In parallel, Microsoft is introducing Elevate programmes in Singapore to address uneven AI readiness. These include training for educators to build confidence in using AI in classrooms, and upskilling nonprofit leaders to adopt AI responsibly within their organisations. The programmes aim to strengthen long-term workforce capability and ensure inclusive access to AI skills across sectors.
The move aligns with Singapore’s National AI Strategy 2.0 and comes amid rising demand for AI skills. Data from LinkedIn shows AI literacy demand in Singapore has grown over 70% year-on-year, signalling a shift towards AI fluency as a baseline workforce expectation.
The combined investment and skilling push position Singapore to deepen its AI talent pipeline, improve job readiness, and reinforce its role as a leading AI innovation hub in Asia.
