Cyprus Diaspora Forum 2026 positions Cyprus at the centre of global investment and innovation

The third Cyprus Diaspora Forum 2026 (CDF 2026), from May 6 to May 9 in Limassol, reflected Cyprus’s increasing confidence as a critical hub in the south-eastern Mediterranean. The event included keynote speakers, forums, fireside chats, and significant networking.

Cyprus is now seen less as a small tourist island economy, hostage to geostrategic complexities and larger powers. The island republic is rapidly emerging as a strategic south-eastern Mediterranean hub for business, science, technology and culture—positioned between West and East and connected to global markets.

Australians featured prominently

Forum organisers in a media statement said that it “brought together government ministers, entrepreneurs, investors, academics, scientists, artists and [Cypriot] diaspora leaders” in one of the “largest international gatherings focused on Cyprus’ economic and strategic future”.

Australian Cypriots featured prominently throughout the Forum and the CYDIA Awards, underscoring the influence of the Cypriot Australian community. Effie Athanassiou received the Advocating Cyprus Award for her contribution to promoting Cyprus internationally. Entrepreneur Chris Christofi, who heads a major Australian property and investment group, received the Social and Philanthropy Award, while Dr. Maria Krambia-Kapardis received the Impact Award for her contribution to research and public life.

Cyprus’s economic recasting and its diaspora reach

The Forum forms part of Cyprus’s broader economic recasting. A different logic is taking hold—one increasingly driven by the Cypriot diaspora. In Cypriot terms, it resembles a Mediterranean echo of Singapore: a small, resource-constrained island that, between the late 1960s and 1990s, transformed itself into a global trading and financial hub, and helped define the first wave of “Asian tiger” economies.

Cyprus, however, starts from a different historical baseline. For millennia it has functioned as an intellectual, multilingual and commercial crossroads between East and West. That role is now being reactivated through a large and highly skilled global Greek Cypriot diaspora, spanning the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, the Middle East, Central Asia, Africa and Southeast Asia, alongside a more coordinated effort by the Cypriot state.

Within this framework, discussions centred on investment, innovation, entrepreneurship and the role of the diaspora in reshaping Cyprus’s position in the global economy

Senior representatives of the Republic of Cyprus played a visible role throughout the event. Among them were Irene Piki, Deputy Minister to the President of Cyprus; Nicodemos Damianou, Deputy Minister for Research, Innovation and Digital Policy; and Kostas Koumis, Deputy Minister for Tourism.

The Forum also attracted internationally recognised figures including Theo Paphitis, one of the United Kingdom’s best-known retail entrepreneurs and investors and a long-running investor on the BBC television series Dragons’ Den.

Other participants included entrepreneur and founder of AEON Group Demetrios Mallios; former CIA counter-terrorism officer, author and foreign policy analyst John Kiriakou; the Chief Scientist of Cyprus Demetris Skourides, leading key aspects of Cyprus’s innovation and digital transformation agenda; and psychologist, academic and media commentator Dr. Linda Papadopoulos.

The Forum was supported by the Research and Innovation Foundation, Invest Cyprus, the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the University of Cyprus.

Investment, innovation and global positioning

According to organisers, the Forum facilitated several Memoranda of Understanding and strategic collaborations expected to generate new business activity in technology, trade, investment and entrepreneurship.

The programme opened with a VIP cocktail event at the AMARA Hotel, featuring music performances and a fashion show by designer Michalis Pantelidis. Entertainment throughout the opening night included performances by the Cyprus Choral Association, soprano Aliki Chrysochou and singer-songwriter Evangelia.

One of the key sessions, powered by the Research and Innovation Foundation, examined funding pathways and collaboration opportunities between Cyprus-based organisations and diaspora professionals abroad. The Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry hosted an SME showcase where six businesses presented directly to investors and stakeholders. The Cyprus Diaspora Forum Startup Launchpad featured startup founders pitching ventures in technology and innovation.

CYDIA Awards recognise global Cypriot excellence

A highlight was the CYDIA Awards 2026 gala ceremony held at the Parklane Resort & Spa on May 9. The awards recognised Cypriot diaspora achievers across business, education, culture, health, philanthropy, media and entrepreneurship.

British Cypriot retail entrepreneur and long-running investor on the BBC’s Dragons’ Den, Theo Paphitis, received the Diaspora Ambassador Lifetime Achievement Award.

A Diaspora Ambassador Award was presented to Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou, a Cypriot business leader and Joint CEO of Tototheo Global, specialising in maritime communications and digitalisation for the global shipping industry.

Other awardees included Christos A. Poullaides, who received the Diaspora Entrepreneur Award for his work in construction and infrastructure across the Middle East and Europe.

The gala included dance choreographed by Antigoni Tasouri, inspired by Lefkara lace traditions, with narration by Christos Gregoriades and music by Costas Cacoyannis. Performers included soprano Chryso Makariou, singers Sofia Patsalides, Alexandros Tsangarides and Savvas Mouskos, before a concert by Stavros Konstantinou and Antri Karantoni.

The fourth Cyprus Diaspora Forum is scheduled for Limassol from May 5 to May 8 next year. The Forum’s broader objective remains linking Cyprus with international markets while strengthening the role of the global Cypriot diaspora in investment, innovation and long-term economic development.
