Amazon to invest $5 bn in Anthropic, may add $20 bn more as AI partnership deepens
New Delhi: Amazon has announced a major expansion of its partnership with AI company Anthropic, combining fresh investment with a long-term infrastructure deal focused on generative AI.
As per Amazon, the company will invest $5 billion in Anthropic immediately, with the possibility of up to an additional $20 billion in the future, subject to certain commercial milestones. This comes on top of the $8 billion already invested earlier.
The development is part of a broader 10-year collaboration under which Anthropic has committed to spending more than $100 billion on AWS technologies.
Anthropic will use Amazon’s cloud infrastructure and AI chips to train and run its advanced AI models, including Claude. The deal also gives Anthropic access to up to 5 gigawatts of AI compute capacity, powered by Amazon’s Trainium chips and Graviton processors. Additionally, the Claude platform will be directly available on AWS, making it easier for users to access and deploy AI tools.
The collaboration will also expand services across key international markets, including Asia and Europe. Anthropic will secure access to up to 5 gigawatts (GW) of current and future generations of Amazon’s Trainium chips, which will be used to train and power its AI models. The collaboration includes Trainium2, Trainium3, Trainium4, along with future chip generations as they are introduced.
Amazon said that more than 100,000 customers currently use Anthropic’s Claude models on AWS, making it one of the most widely used AI model families on Amazon Bedrock.
The partnership also strengthens Project Rainier, which Amazon describes as one of the world’s largest AI compute clusters, built with nearly half a million Trainium2 chips.
Speaking on the development, Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon, said, “Our custom AI silicon offers high performance at significantly lower cost for customers, which is why it’s in such hot demand.”
“Anthropic’s commitment to run its large language models on AWS Trainium for the next decade reflects the progress we’ve made together on custom silicon, as we continue delivering the technology and infrastructure our customers need to build with generative AI,” he added further.
Dario Amodei, CEO and co-founder of Anthropic, added, “Our users tell us Claude is increasingly essential to how they work, and we need to build the infrastructure to keep pace with rapidly growing demand.
Our collaboration with Amazon will allow us to continue advancing AI research while delivering Claude to our customers, including the more than 100,000 building on AWS.”
The move underlines Amazon’s growing focus on the AI race, as it strengthens its cloud and chip ecosystem while deepening ties with one of the leading AI model companies.
