AI Made in Morocco : Mistral AI Partners with MTNRA on Cultural-Linguistic AI Models

French AI company Mistral AI has announced an expansion of its partnership with the Kingdom of Morocco, signing a formal convention with the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform (MTNRA) at the “AI Made in Morocco” event held on January 12, 2026.

The partnership centers on the creation of the Mistral AI & MTNRA lab, a dedicated research and development hub designed to foster technical collaboration between French and Moroccan AI experts. The lab will facilitate knowledge transfer through workshops, technical exchanges, and methodology sharing, positioning Morocco at the forefront of AI development in Africa.

This builds on the groundwork laid in September 2025, when Minister Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Arthur Mensch, co-founder and CEO of Mistral AI, at the Ministry’s headquarters. That initial agreement focused on developing local AI skills through training, applied research, and knowledge sharing, while encouraging the emergence of startups and industrial projects tailored to Moroccan needs.

It also emphasized ethical, inclusive, and responsible AI use, ensuring data protection and citizens’ trust, and positioning Morocco as a regional reference platform in digital innovation. The new lab represents the next phase of this collaboration, with a cornerstone initiative to co-develop AI models specifically tailored to Morocco’s unique linguistic and cultural landscape, including Darija, the Moroccan Arabic dialect.

By 2030, structured AI deployment is expected to add 100 billion dirhams ($10 billion) to Morocco’s GDP, underscoring the strategic importance of these initiatives. The partnership also builds on growing momentum in Africa’s AI sector, where investment and development have accelerated in recent years, though the continent still receives less than 1 percent of global AI funding according to industry reports.

Across the region, Nvidia has announced expansion into Morocco, Egypt, Kenya, and Nigeria through partnerships with Cassava Technologies. Ethiopia has also unveiled plans to establish a dedicated artificial intelligence university, only the second of its kind worldwide, designed to graduate 1,000 professionals annually and offer scholarships across Africa.
