Google brings Gemini app to macOS as native desktop app
New Delhi: Google has introduced a native macOS version of its Gemini app, extending the AI assistant’s availability to desktop environments.
The update was detailed in a blog post by Michael Friedman, Group Product Manager for the Gemini app, who described the release as a step towards deeper integration of AI into daily workflows.
The macOS version is designed to provide quick access to the assistant through a keyboard shortcut, allowing users to interact with the tool without switching between applications. Google said the app can be accessed using “Option + Space”, enabling users to seek assistance while continuing their work.
A key feature of the desktop version is the ability to share on-screen content with the assistant. Users can provide Gemini with access to open windows or local files to receive contextual responses. For instance, the post notes that users reviewing a chart can ask, “What are the three biggest takeaways here?” and receive a summary based on the visible content.
The app also supports use cases across writing, data handling and creative tasks. Users working on documents or spreadsheets can query information or formulas without leaving their current window. The post also references creative tools, stating that users can generate images or videos within the workflow.
The macOS app is available globally for devices running macOS 15 and above, and is being offered at no cost to existing users.
Google indicated that this release represents an early stage in broader plans for the Gemini ecosystem, with further updates expected as it develops more advanced desktop-based AI capabilities.
