The Weather Channel Introduces Retro Forecast Site, AI-Powered Storm Radar Assistant
The Weather Channel has introduced two contrasting products that will let users either lean into AI or avoid it completely. In addition to updating its Storm Radar app with new generative AI features, it’s launched a nostalgic “RetroCast” experience that uses up-to-date weather data to recreate classic cable broadcasts from decades past.
The newly revised Storm Radar app offers the usual look at storms and dense weather data, but now offers a conversational AI assistant as well. The Weather Company describes the assistant as “your pocket meteorologist,” which can answer questions about the best time to walk the dog, how the weather might affect a user’s commute, or which clothes to wear that day. The app also displays high-resolution radar, severe weather alerts, various map layers, and more for users who want detailed forecast information.
RetroCast, on the other hand, takes an almost opposite approach. Accessed via weather.com/retro, this tool recreates the look and feel of The Weather Channel’s 80s and 90s broadcasts, with smooth jazz, 2D graphics, and looping “Local on the 8s” segments. While it provides live data on current weather conditions, radar information, and short- and long-term forecasts, it does not use generative AI or complex visuals. This one is ideal for users who want simple weather information at a glance or miss the nostalgic forecasts from their youth.
