10 key highlights from AI digital transformation to Inflation
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Economic Survey 2025-26 in the Lok Sabha, providing an annual overview of India’s economic performance for the financial year. The survey recommended several key reforms, including a major overhaul of the fertiliser sector, boosting research and development, strengthening irrigation infrastructure, and promoting crop diversification. It also emphasized the need to align AI adoption with India’s structural realities, taking into account factors like capital availability, energy constraints, institutional capacity, and market depth. The goal is to ensure that technology choices support sustainable long-term growth rather than creating fragile dependencies.
Top 10 Key Highlights from the Economic Survey 2025-26
1. Strong GDP Growth
India’s real GDP is estimated to grow 7.4% in FY26, exceeding earlier forecasts. This marks the fourth consecutive year that India is the fastest-growing major economy in the world.
2. Higher Potential Growth
The Survey raises India’s potential growth rate to 7.0%, up from 6.5% three years ago, reflecting ongoing domestic reforms and large-scale public infrastructure investment.
3. Credit Rating Upgrade
In 2025, India secured its first major credit rating upgrade in nearly 20 years, with S&P moving its rating from BBB- to BBB, showcasing strong economic performance and fiscal discipline.
4. Inflation Under Control
Headline CPI inflation fell to 1.7% in 2025-26, helped by lower food prices and effective monetary policies, keeping overall price growth in check.
5. Fiscal Consolidation
The government achieved a fiscal deficit of 4.8% of GDP in FY25, slightly below the budgeted 4.9%, and aims for 4.4% in FY26, maintaining a steady decline from FY21 levels.
6. Consumption Driving Growth
Private consumption rose to 61.5% of GDP, its highest since FY12, supported by rising real incomes and stable employment, reinforcing domestic demand as a key growth driver.

The Survey proposes moving from “Import Substitution” to “Strategic Resilience”, making India a critical and indispensable participant in global value chains.
8. Strong Agricultural Performance
The agriculture sector achieved record cereal production of 3,320 lakh tonnes in 2024-25, contributing to low inflation and enhancing food security and rural resilience.

The Survey advocates for an “entrepreneurial state” that can manage risks, act under uncertainty, and build strong institutional capacity beyond simple compliance.

With 88% of firms adopting AI in 2025, the Survey emphasizes a phased AI roadmap, focusing on human capital development, safety, and a growth-oriented approach for technology adoption.
