Apple Could Turn Siri Into Full AI Chatbot With iOS 27 Update, Challenging ChatGPT
Apple is reportedly planning a major overhaul of Siri by transforming it into a full-fledged AI chatbot as it looks to enter the generative AI race. The move would pit Apple against players such as OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and xAI, with the company said to be adding new features and capabilities to make Siri far more powerful than its current version. The upgraded Siri chatbot is expected to launch in the second half of the year.

Apple is reportedly working on a project codenamed Campos to transform Siri into an AI-powered chatbot, according to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter. The chatbot is said to be integrated across iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices through their respective operating systems, marking a major shift in how Apple approaches its voice assistant.

Despite the overhaul, Siri is expected to retain all its existing functions and continue to work with the same activation commands. However, the chatbot version will reportedly be far more capable, with features such as back-and-forth conversations, image generation, on-screen content analysis, and improved web search. It is also said to support both voice and text inputs for more flexible interactions.
The report adds that the upgraded Siri will be able to analyse on-device data and respond to natural-language queries. For example, users may be able to describe an image vaguely and have Siri search the Photos app to find a match. These capabilities are reportedly powered by an AI model from Google, said to be comparable to Gemini 3 in performance.
Notably, the full chatbot version of Siri is not expected to arrive before iOS 27 and corresponding updates for other Apple devices. An earlier upgrade, featuring advanced AI capabilities, is reportedly slated to launch this spring with iOS 26.4. The move is particularly striking given that Apple software chief Craig Federighi had previously said the company would not build a “bolt-on chatbot,” arguing that such an approach did not align with Apple’s vision for AI.
